The Awakening of Society
Inspired by George Orwell's book "1984", issues such as pollution and governmentsurveillance are portrayed within the art piece as they relate to current societal problems. Therefore, the collage represents a social commentary on the cost of living and gas prices surges. Society rests regarding these issues as the eye watches the smoke blow past. Hence, the hand holding a cigarette represents a history of bad decisions in humans that become habitual, which flows into the consistent use of gas and power that indirectly kill humanity combined. Furthermore, the security cameras, inspired by the concept of "Big Brother" in 1984, portray government surveillance and the presence of data manipulation enforcing the further use of gas, cigarettes, and the dissociation of self. Therefore all these factors combined contribute to the end of humanity.
Utilizing the color palette from the painting "Blooming" by H.R Ocampo, painted in 1939, there is an emphasis on complementary colors, such as red and green, in addition to the triadic color combination incorporating red, yellow, and blue. Red is used to portray the evils present in society, while blue represents the responsibility we hold as humans. Finally, Yellow resembles optimism toward reversing environmental disasters from the habitual use of gas.
